Common questions
Does Yut keep recording with the phone locked?
Yes. Yut records in the background and on the Lock Screen. If iOS closes the app, recording carries on once you've moved about 200 m, and the route comes back the next time you open Yut, with the miles in between filled in. A stretch it couldn't see is drawn dashed.
Why does Yut ask for “Always” location access?
So it can keep recording when the app is in the background, the phone is locked or iOS has closed the app. Yut uses your location to show where you are on the map, but records and keeps it only while you're recording, or where you drop a pin. Precise Location keeps the line true to where you went, and Motion & Fitness lets Yut ease off GPS while you're standing still, to save battery.
Where are my routes stored?
On your iPhone, saved as you record. They go nowhere unless you connect Backup, which is optional and invite-only for now. Your pins and imported trail maps stay on the phone too.
How do I move my routes to a new iPhone?
With Backup connected, Restore routes brings every route of your account to the new iPhone. Backup is invite-only for now; without it, you can export each route as a GPX file from its page and keep the files. Pins aren't backed up yet.
Does it work without a signal?
Recording does: GPS needs no signal, and every point is saved on the phone as it comes in. The map shows the tiles it has already shown you (kept for 90 days); downloading an area ahead of time isn't available yet. Weather, lightning, fires and creek levels need a connection.
Which trail map files can I import?
BackCountry Navigator (.bcn), GPX, GeoJSON, KML, KMZ and Maps Plus (.mpz). Use Import a file on the Map layers page, or open the file in Yut from the Files app or another app's share sheet. Imported trail maps stay on your phone and share one legend.
Is the Hatfield–McCoy trail map really free?
Yes, and it always will be. Load the official Hatfield–McCoy trail inventory file as a layer and Yut shows its trails with their numbers, names and difficulty, the trailheads, the towns and the system dividers. A Hatfield–McCoy trail permit is still required to ride.
How do I delete my data?
Delete a route from its page and its points and pins go with it. If you connected Backup, Options → Backup → Delete my server data erases what Yut's server holds. For anything else, write to us here and choose “Privacy or data request”.
